Sandplay Therapy with Cara

"A safe space for self-expression, healing and resolving personal challenges, especially when words aren’t enough".

About the approach

Sandplay Therapy is a counselling approach where clients use sand, water, and miniature figures to create a "sandworld," allowing for non-verbal expression of thoughts and feelings. It originated in the late 1920s with British paediatrician Margaret Lowenfeld and her "world technique", which was later expanded to adults by Jungian analyst Dora Kalff.

The approach is a gentle, experiential form of therapy that allows people of all ages to express themselves in a safe and supportive space. By creating scenes in the sand, clients can explore feelings, experiences, and memories that might otherwise feel overwhelming or difficult to talk about. This method is especially supportive for neurodivergent individuals, trauma recovery, and emotional regulation. Through the process, people often discover new perspectives, build resilience, and move toward healing in a way that feels natural and affirming in a safe and accepting space. Time is allocated at the end of the 50 minute session for verbal processing if the client finds this what they are needing.

For Children

In Sandplay Therapy, children are expertly guided by Cara who facilitates them to use a tray of sand and a wide choice of miniature figurines and symbols to build their own little worlds. This playful process feels safe and familiar, while gently helping children express their feelings, worries, or ideas without needing to find the right words. Through this process children are able to work through big emotions, build confidence, develop interpersonal skills and new ways of coping, all in a calm and supportive environment.

For Adolescents & Adults

Sandplay Therapy offers a creative and non-judgemental way to explore your inner world. Using a tray of sand and symbolic miniatures, you can create scenes that reflect your experiences, emotions, and personal story, often expressing things that might feel too complex to put into words. This process can bring new insights, support healing from past experiences, and strengthen your sense of self. Many people find it calming, empowering, and a meaningful way to work through challenges at their own pace with the support of Cara who sits alongside you to facilitate this process.

Drawing on Cara's University training in psychology, teaching and counselling, along with her certification in Sandplay Therapy and Symbol Work from The Expressive Therapies Institute of Australia, Cara is able to provide alternative and creative approaches to therapy. She is a member of the Certified Practising Counsellors Australia (CPCA) , holds current VIT (teaching) registration, current WWCC and Police Check, NDIS screener check and is currently completing a Masters of Social Work.
